Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song United States. 2022. Directed by Daniel Geller, Dayna Goldfine. (115 mins.) Rated PG-13. [CC,AD] in English
Leonard Cohen created a song that's now ingrained in our culture and is likely to remain there. HALLELUJAH: LEONARD COHEN, A JOURNEY, A SONG is a definitive exploration of singer/ songwriter Leonard Cohen as seen through the prism of his internationally renowned hymn, Hallelujah. This feature-length documentary weaves together three creative strands: The songwriter and his times; the song’s dramatic journey from record label reject to chart-topping hit; and moving testimonies from major recording artists for whom Hallelujah has become a personal touchstone. Approved for production by Leonard Cohen just before his 80th birthday in 2014, the film accesses a wealth of never-before-seen archival materials from the Cohen Trust including his personal notebooks, journals and photographs, performance footage and extremely rare audio recordings and interviews. From music to meditation, poetry to prayer, Leonard Cohen remains, even in the broadest of biographical strokes, a fascinating character and this exemplary doc is a well researched, heartfelt tribute to the man, his mind and the music.
Vengeance United States. 2022. Directed by B.J. Novak. (90 mins.) Rated R. [CC,AD] in English
The Office's B.J. Novak has crafted a terrific, irresistibly original directorial debut with VENGEANCE, a unique and stinging dark comedy that's like Preston Sturges meets film noir meets NPR. A quick-paced, witty-as-they-come tall tale, this culture-clash comedy finds Ben (played by Novak), an aspiring New York podcaster, in search of a story. When the body of a woman he’d been hooking up with is discovered in a West Texas oil field, he stumbles onto exactly the sort of true-crime tale that could make or break his career. Launching an investigation into her death in collaboration with his high-powered producer Eloise (Issa Rae), the overly confident Ben finds himself attempting to navigate a wildly unfamiliar culture and is forced to confront his own shortcomings and preconceptions. A cosmic riff on how the two sides of America are working, nearly in tandem, to tear the country apart, this satire explains, in a way that may blow your head open a little bit, why the very way our culture now dissects and explains everything (everywhere, and yes, all at once) has had the paradoxical effect of robbing it all of meaning.
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On United States. 2022. Directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp. (89 mins.) Rated PG. [CC,AD] in English
Playful, hopeful and wise, MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON makes the most of its thumb-sized title character's unique perspective on the world. Marcel (voiced by Jenny Slate) is an absolutely charming, completely adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful and loving existence with his grandmother Connie (voiced by Isabella Rossellini) and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family. Exploring themes of isolation and grief with surprising sophistication, this humorous and heartwarming film is a celebration of the connections that make our lives memorable, our very human need for community, and is a delightful reminder that movies truly are magic.
Where The Crawdads Sing United States. 2022. Directed by Olivia Newman. (125 mins.) Rated PG-13. [CC,AD] in English
At once a striking ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story and a compelling tale of murder, WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING tells the story of Kya, a reclusive young girl abandoned by her parents who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. For years, rumors of this "Marsh Girl" haunted Barkley Cove, isolating the sharp and resilient young woman from the nearby community. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the townsfolk as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, this exquisitely-told tale reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.
Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris UK. 2022. Directed by Anthony Fabian. (115 mins.) Rated PG. [CC,AD] in English
Anchored by Manville’s beautifully nuanced and effervescent performance, this charmer extolls the virtues of kindness, empathy and the transformative power of the pursuit of happiness. In partnership with the House of Dior, MRS. HARRIS GOES TO PARIS tells the story of Ada, a widowed cleaning lady in 1950s London who falls madly in love with a couture Dior dress and decides that she must have one of her own. After she works, starves and gambles to raise the funds to pursue this dream, she embarks on an adventure to Paris which will change not only her own outlook, but the very future of the House of Dior. It affably wears its earnestness as well as its quiet confidence on its sleeve. It is a pleasant surprise and a sheer pleasure.
